BRAZIL: A dual narrative on deforestation
Earlier in July, Brazil’s Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), the national institute for space research, released data according to which deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon reached 920.21 km2 in June. This represents an 88% increase on the deforested surface in June 2018. Preliminary figures suggest that as large a surface has already been cleared in the first half of July. President Jair Bolsonaro, however, questions such statistics on deforestation as they do not align with his assurances that Brazil preserves the environment more than any other country in the world. During a breakfast meeting with foreign journalists on 19 July, he even declared that the Inpe’s data was a “lie”.
