“I love the Northeast,” President Jair Bolsonaro declared on 23 July during the inauguration of a new airport in Vitória da Conquista, a city in the south of the Brazilian Northeast’s largest state, Bahia. Bolsonaro’s declaration of love belied the tense relations between his government and the governors of the north-eastern states, which traditionally support the leftist Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT).
