* Mexico’s environment ministry (Semarnat) has published an environmental impact report (MIA) that will allow construction to begin on the mixed civil/military Santa Lucía international airport located between the Zumpango and Tecámac municipalities in the Estado de México (Edomex). The report was presented by the national defence ministry (Sedena) to Semarnat’s environmental impact and risk directorate (DGIRA) in April 2019, but it was not approved until 17 July. The publication of the MIA, which rules that the construction will not seriously threaten wildlife in the region nor have a lasting effect on the environment, allows construction of the airport to begin,
after court mandates had previously put the project on hold over environmental concerns. Semarnat includes a list of recommendations for the mitigation of the socio-environmental impact of the airport on nearby municipalities, such as measures for water treatment and to limit noise pollution. The publication of the MIA comes after President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador called for no further delays on the start of the project, saying “
the procedures have taken too long”.
