In brief: Costa Rican melon company gets EU sustainable certification

* Costa Rica’s official export promotion agency (Procomer) has announced that the company, Melones De La Peninsula, is the first Costa Rican exporter of organic, sustainably grown watermelon and honeydew to the European Union. Melones de la Peninsula, which owns a farm in the Puntarenas province in northwest Costa Rica, obtained organic and sustainable certification for their melons from Netherlands-based, international testing, inspection, and certification (TIC) company Kiwa NV. The organic melons were grown in greenhouses with automated irrigation systems focused on eliminating water waste to improve sustainability. The first European exports were a 1,500kg shipments, by air, of honeydew and watermelon, followed by a 10,000kg shipment by sea.
