In brief: Costa Rica’s unemployment on the rise

* Costa Rica’s national statistics institute (Inec) has released its latest unemployment report, which shows that the unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2019 reached 11.9%, up by 3.3 percentage points on the same period last year. Compared to the first quarter of 2019, the unemployment rate has increased by 0.6 percentage points from 11.3%, with a total 296,000 people unemployed. Unemployment is higher in urban areas, at 12.3%, and stands at 10.8% in rural areas.
