In brief: Mexico makes progress on labour reforms

* Canadian government officials have congratulated Mexico on its work towards implementing labour reforms, as part of the new US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) reached in November 2018. Canada’s labour minister, Patty Hajdu, met with her Mexican counterpart, Luisa María Alcalde, in Mexico City to establish a Mexico-Canada Bilateral Labour Working Group to facilitate cooperation and implementation of new labour policies and standards. Canada’s ambassador to Mexico, Pierre Alarie, said: “We recognise the enormous effort Mexico has made in its commitment to strengthening the labour market”. The new working group will provide assistance to Mexico in implementing further reforms.
