Brazil: From 29 July to 1 August, the US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross paid a visit to Brazil – the first visit to the country by a US Secretary of Commerce since 2011. According to a US embassy press release, the visit was aimed at reinforcing the “Department of Commerce’s ongoing commitment to a strong commercial and economic relationship with Brazil” and highlighting US “industry interest in the Brazilian infrastructure sector and the importance of transparency and long-term value in future projects”. Additionally, Ross used the visit to discuss the crisis in Venezuela, in terms of US support for both its people and “its return to democracy”. On 31 July, after a visit to São Paulo state, Ross travelled to Brasília where he met President Jair Bolsonaro, along with economy minister Paulo Guedes, infrastructure minister Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, and members of the business community. Following his meeting with Ross, Guedes declared that the negotiation process for a free trade deal between the US and Brazil is now officially underway.
