Human trafficking in LAC: a multi-faceted crime

In 2013, the United Nations (UN) designated 30 July as the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, with the aim of raising awareness of the situation of the victims of human trafficking, and of the promotion and protection of their rights. This year, the UN Office on Drugs & Crime (UNODC) is using the World Day to highlight the importance of government action in fighting human trafficking and protecting its victims. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), although arguably one of the world’s more successful regions in combatting this crime and seeking to identify victims, has seen a recent decline in the prosecution of perpetrators and in the implementation of legislation related to human trafficking and its victims.
