In brief: Chile’s president promises “much better” second half

* Chile’s latest monthly economic activity index (Imacec) shows 1.3% growth in June 2019 compared with the same month in 2018. The mining Imacec was up 0.3%, with the non-mining index up 1.4%, driven by the services and construction sectors. In seasonally adjusted terms and compared with figures for May, the mining Imacec increased by 1% whilst the non-mining Imacec dropped 0.1%. This growth is lower than expected, but President Sebastián Piñera has predicted a “much better” second half of the year, promising a strong recovery and “more jobs, better wages and more opportunities for small to medium sized enterprises [SMEs] and the middle class”.
