In brief: Costa Rica’s health-sector unions on strike

* Health-sector unions in Costa Rica have gone on strike in protest at the government’s fiscal reform, which they believe affects the rights of public workers. The objective of the strike is to demand the respect of agreements signed by the national social security institute (CCSS) authorities and workers’ representatives earlier this year to guarantee labour rights, as well as demand the reversal of the fiscal reform, which includes spending caps that will affect the services delivered to patients. According to the Unión Nacional de Empleados de la Caja y la Seguridad Social (Undeca), which represents CCSS employees, “the objective of deteriorating public health services to the population and advancing privatisation is totally evident”
