In brief: Mexico urges US and China to back away from trade war

* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has urged China and the US to prevent a trade war. López Obrador’s comments follow US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement that he plans to impose 10% tariffs on US$300bn of Chinese imports, from 1 September, which led China to devalue the yuan. The Price and Quotation Index (IPC) of the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) fell by 1.26% on 1 August while the Mexican peso fell against the dollar, depreciating by 0.48%.
