Demands for better frameworks for environment, human rights and mining in Central America

Amid growing scrutiny of Latin America’s ability to mitigate the effects of climate change, Central America’s ‘Dry Corridor’ is an area where this challenge is particularly acute. The Dry Corridor spans the Mesoamerican isthmus from the southern Mexican state of Chiapas to Panama on the South American mainland, and the environmental sustainability of its key economic sectors is extremely important. With several countries in the region emphasising the role in their national development of mining, a sector which has faced criticism over its disregard for the environment and human rights, two new reports are demanding action be taken to streamline legal provisions in Central America.
