Health-sector union strikes. On 5 August, health-sector unions in Costa Rica went on strike in protest at the government’s fiscal reform, which they claim affects the rights of public sector workers. The objective of the strike is to demand the respect of agreements signed by the national social security institute (CCSS) and workers’ representatives earlier this year to guarantee labour rights, as well as to demand the reversal of the fiscal reform, which includes spending caps that will affect the services delivered to patients.
