* Panama’s public works minister, Rafael Sabonge, has announced plans to launch bids for 18 public infrastructure projects around the country at a cost of US$445m. Sabonge referred to the public-private partnerships (PPPs) as a tool to encourage investment, stating that with the country’s “complicated” fiscal situation “what is sought is private investment development in public infrastructure projects”, noting that the projects will both “generate many sources of employment and improve connectivity”. The projects include upgrading and expanding the Pan-American highway and rehabilitating the streets in Colón Island, the main island in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago (Bocas del Toro province).
