In brief: Mexico says no more mining concessions

* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced that no more concessions are to be given to mining companies by his government. In remarks made at the event held at a rural hospital in Concepción del Oro municipality, Zacatecas state, President López Obrador called for mining companies to invest in and look after the environment, as well as to consider increasing miners’ wages. He said that over a period of more than three decades, 80m of the country’s 200m hectares had been licenced to mining companies, making up 40% of the national territory. He said that while existing concessions will be respected, no more will be handed out.
