* Costa Rica’s national social security institute (CCSS), the executive branch and representatives from different health-sector unions have reached an agreement which ends an eight-day strike which affected health services throughout Costa Rica. The objective of the strike was to demand the respect of agreements signed by CCSS and workers’ representatives earlier this year to guarantee labour rights, as well as to demand the reversal of a fiscal reform, which includes spending caps that will affect the services delivered to patients. In the agreement signed on 12 August, the parties involved agreed to take this matter before the courts. According to data released by CCSS, as a result of the strike, 38% of general and specialised consultations were missed and around 50% of scheduled surgeries did not take place.
