BRAZIL: International fallout over policy

Weeks of criticisms from environmental NGOs, foreign governments and the international press, as well as concerns raised by scientists and the business and agricultural sectors in Brazil, have not swayed President Jair Bolsonaro’s views on the environment [WR-19-31]. He maintains that deforestation levels in the Brazilian Amazon are not as serious as official government data suggests, and now resorts to irony whenever questioned by journalists on his government’s environmental policies and plans to develop the Amazon’s economic potential. Consequences of his discourse are now being felt.
