Peru’s energy and mines, and economy ministers, Francisco Ísmodes and Carlos Oliva respectively, faced a grilling in congress on 14 August about the suspension of the US$1.4bn ‘Tía María’ open-pit copper mining project in the southern region of Arequipa by President Martín Vizcarra five days earlier. Various opposition figures accused Vizcarra of jeopardising mining investment in Peru and the country’s development. But this could just be an ulterior motive for the main right-wing opposition Fuerza Popular (FP, Fujimoristas) to go after Vizcarra: he incensed FP during his annual address to congress on 28 July by announcing a bill to bring forward legislative elections by a year to April 2020.
