In brief: Brazil could leave Mercosur, Guedes threatens

* Paulo Guedes, Brazil’s economy minister, has said that Brazil could leave the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc if hard-line Peronist Alberto Fernández and his running mate, former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015), win Argentina’s presidential election in October and are not committed to opening the Argentine economy. “We [Brazil] are going to continue opening” as the country seeks to revive growth and improve competitivity, Guedes said, adding that if Argentina resists the bloc’s economic opening, Brazil “will exit Mercosur and leave”.
