In brief: Deforestation in Brazilian Amazon up 66% in July

* A non-profit research institution, Instituto do Homem e Meio Ambiente da Amazônia (Imazon), has released new research which shows that in July 2019 1,287 km2 of the Amazônia Legal (an area composed of nine states that occupies 61% of Brazilian national territory) was lost to deforestation. This marks a 66% increase in relation to July 2018, where 777km2 was lost to deforestation. In annual terms (from August 2018 to July 2019) the Amazônia Legal lost an area of 5,054 km² to deforestation, a 15% increase in relation to the same period of the previous year (August 2017 to July 2018).
