In brief – Paraguay’s farmers protest over tomatoes
* Some 250 tomato growers in Coronel Oviedo, Caaguazú department, have staged demonstrations and blockaded roads in protest at the lack of action taken by the Paraguayan authorities to stop tomato smuggling from Argentina, which they claim is killing national production. The growers estimate that, unless action is taken, they risk losing 120,000kg of tomatoes they have been unable to sell. The protests come despite agreements struck in February with the agriculture & livestock ministry (MAG); Paraguay’s animal and plant health inspection service (Senave); and the agricultural loans facility (CAH) to improve production and trade controls.
