In brief: Mexico hails tomato deal with US

* Mexico’s economy ministry and the US Department of Commerce have announced a new agreement to suspend the antidumping (AD) investigation of fresh tomatoes from Mexico. A US Department of Commerce press release cites US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross as saying that for many years there have been disputes over the roughly US$2bn worth of tomatoes imported annually from Mexico by the US. These disputes “led the Department to terminate an earlier suspension agreement and continue an investigation that could have led to duties of 25% for most Mexican tomato producers”. Following discussions, a new draft suspension agreement was initialled on 20 August. The press release notes that the statute requires a 30-day notice period after the initialling of the draft agreement. At that point, on 19 September, the US Department of Commerce and Mexican tomato growers could sign a final agreement.
