PARAGUAY: Abdo Benítez shielded from impeachment

Paraguay’s President Mario Abdo Benítez withstood an impeachment motion presented in the lower chamber of congress by the main opposition Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA) on 20 August. The PLRA had hoped to enlist the support of a dissident faction within the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) to unseat Abdo Benítez over the accord signed with Brazil on the distribution of energy from the binational hydroelectric dam Itaipú [WR-19-30].
