Ecuador’s top court, the Corte Nacional de Justicia (CNJ), has ordered the preventive detention of former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017) in connection with a corruption case. In a series of tweets from his home in Belgium, Correa accused President Lenín Moreno of orchestrating a campaign of “brutal persecution” designed to preclude his return to Ecuador to compete in presidential elections in 2021.
