COLOMBIA: Banana fungus strikes as China export deal agreed

Colombian agribusiness firm Uniban is holding negotiations with Chinese firm Goodfarmer Foods Holding to start exporting bananas to China. Uniban’s announcement follows President Iván Duque’s state visit to China in late July when he signed an accord enabling Colombian producers to export 4m boxes of bananas annually to the country. Duque said the deal represents US$40m a year for Colombia’s banana industry and “a firm step to continue placing more products on the Chinese market”. But the deal coincides with an outbreak of the Fusarium R4T fungus affecting banana plants in the north-eastern department of La Guajira, leading to the declaration of a state of national emergency.
