PERU: Splits within splits

The confrontation between Peru’s President Martín Vizcarra and the country’s single-chamber legislature appears to be deepening, as political parties fragment further. The battle between Vizcarra and congress is looking like a stand-off where two rivals each hold a gun to the other’s head. Vizcarra is demanding that congress, where the main opposition right-wing Fuerza Popular (FP, Fujimoristas) still has most seats, should approve his remaining anti-corruption reforms, along with a bill bringing forward general elections by a year, so that they are held in April 2020, instead of 2021. Congress is dragging its feet on both counts and is instead considering a plan to impeach the president.
