MEXICO: Political storm brews over Robles case

It is the judicial case that has Mexico’s entire political class intrigued. Rosario Robles, the former head of the social security (Sedesol) and agricultural development (Sedatu) ministries under the Enrique Peña Nieto administration (2012-2018), is to be tried over charges of improper practices while in public office. The case is proving to be highly controversial as Robles and her defence have complained that she is being politically persecuted by the left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to distract from the various problems it continues to face. With the case having the potential to implicate other prominent political figures, it could turn into a major political storm.
