Eduardo Serpa, the director of sustainability for United Kingdom-headquartered multinational mining firm Anglo American, has offered to improve water access in Moquegua region, Peru. In a press conference Serpa announced that the mining company, which owns the US$5bn Quellaveco copper project in the region, will construct a water-supply system in the port city of Ilo and will continue constructing the Vizcachas dam (which will supply water to Moquegua). Serpa noted a total of PEN100m (US$29.6m) will be brought forward from 2022 (the start of the operation stage) to be spent on local development projects. The latest announcement follows a round table meeting (between government officials and local leaders) which paved the way for the lifting of a blockade which had been staged by protesters on a road to the Quellaveco deposit. The protesters accused the mining company of contaminating the water supply and causing environmental damage during its construction of the Quellaveco copper mine.
