In brief: Mexico’s GDP grows 0% in second quarter

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released its latest revised economic growth figures, which show that seasonally adjusted GDP grew 0% in the second quarter of 2019 compared to the previous quarter, narrowly avoiding a technical recession, as GDP contracted 0.2% in the first quarter. Year-on-year GDP growth in the second quarter of 2019 was 0.3%. In response to these latest figures, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador refused to lower his expectations for 2% annual GDP growth this year. “I remain unchanged, because we are doing very well, very different from what the experts think”, López Obrador stated.
