In brief: US lifts embargo on Colombian yellowfin tuna

* Following a request from the Colombian government, the US Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has authorised the lifting of a ban (which stood for almost 29 years) on the import of Colombian yellowfin tuna. The US authorities determined that Colombia has now met international standards on sustainability and species conservation for yellowfin tuna fishing. In 2018, the US imported US$201.5m of yellowfin tuna globally and its imports of the fish increased by 13% between 2002 and 2018. Colombian yellowfin tuna exports to the US will now no longer be subject to tariffs.
