In brief: Guatemala to issue food coupons in response to drought

* Guatemala’s minister of agriculture, livestock and food (Maga), Mario Méndez, has announced that food coupons will be offered to the 50,000 families who have been affected by a drought that has harmed roughly 42,000 hectares of crops (predominantly maize). Each recipient will receive a total of Q250 (US$32.6) in coupons. Méndez also announced that the government has bought Q18m of food from the United Nations World Food Programme, destined for those at risk of food insecurity.
