In brief: Colombia ratifies Minamata Convention

* The Colombian government led by President Iván Duque has ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercury, becoming the 113th country to do so. A global treaty to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury, the Minamata Convention entered into force on 16 August 2017 on the 90th day after the date of deposit of the 50th instrument of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession. President Duque has said that Colombia should be a country free of mercury by 2023.
