In brief: Brazil’s unemployment continuing to fall

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (IBGE) has released the latest employment figures, which show that unemployment continues to fall. The unemployment rate stood at 11.8% in the rolling quarter to July, down from 12.5% in the previous rolling quarter (February to April 2019), and down from 12.3% in May-July 2018. The unemployed population has fallen 4.6% compared with the previous rolling quarter, to 12.6m people. The employed population has grown to 93.6m. Within this, the number of formal private-sector employees has remained stable, but the number of workers in the informal sector has increased 3.8% quarter-on-quarter to 11.7m, the highest number on record for the rolling quarter ending in July.
