In brief: Colombia’s FDI up 24.7% in first half of 2019

* Colombia’s trade, industry & tourism ministry has released new figures which show FDI in the first half of 2019 reached US$7.3bn, up 24.7% on the same period in 2018. According to the latest (July 2019) report from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America & the Caribbean (Eclac), Colombia was the fourth largest recipient of FDI in the region in 2018, with inflows of US$11.35bn. While this was down 18% on 2017, Eclac notes this decrease must be qualified as inflows in 2017 were “exceptionally high, as a result of the fine paid by the Mexican company Claro and Spain’s Telefónica, after an arbitration court ruled in favour of Colombia in the matter of the ownership of national networks”.
