In brief: Brazil pension reform passes committee stage in senate

* The constitution and justice committee (CCJ) in Brazil’s senate has approved the text of the pension reform (PEC 6/19). The text now goes to the plenary, where it will be submitted to two rounds of voting and must receive a three-fifths majority to pass as it is a constitutional amendment. The president of the senate, Davi Alcolumbre, hopes that the senate plenary will begin debating the PEC on 11 September, and that voting will be concluded by 10 October at the latest. The CCJ has also approved a text known as the ‘Parallel PEC’, a constitutional amendment which has been introduced at senate level to apply the new pension rules to state and municipal public workers (the main pension reform PEC which was approved by the chamber of deputies earlier in August only considers private sector and federal public workers).
