Comments made by Mexico’s interior minister, Olga Sánchez Cordero, have led to speculation that the government is exploring the possibility of reaching some sort of pact with armed criminal groups that would help to reduce the high levels of violence in the country. The government has denied that this is the case, though it has admitted that it is in conversation with some the ‘self-defence groups’ of armed vigilantes that have sprung up in some states in recent years about pacifying the country.
