BRAZIL: Slow economic uptick, but businesses unhappy

“August appears to be the end of a difficult period for the Brazilian economy,” the secretary for economic policy in Brazil’s economy ministry, Adolfo Sachsida, said on 3 September. He was speaking at a seminar in Brasília, co-organised by the economy ministry and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on the topic of ‘Reform for Growth’. The government led by President Jair Bolsonaro has indeed been pursuing an intense reform agenda seeking to attain fiscal stability and spur economic growth. But Bolsonaro himself may have recently torpedoed some of these efforts by damaging the Brazilian brand abroad and thus threatening the country’s exports.
