The Organization of American States (OAS) has issued another resolution on Nicaragua in response to the crisis stemming from a crackdown by the government led by President Daniel Ortega on its opponents which began in April 2018. Issued on 28 August the resolution formally establishes a commission tasked with carrying out “diplomatic efforts at the highest level” to seek a solution. The commission has 75 days to submit a report, after which the Ortega government could face sanctions. The government, which upset the international community over its decision to suspend dialogue with the opposition movement Alianza Cívica por la Justicia y la Democracia (ACJD) in July [WR-19-31], remains intransigent, however, refusing to discuss an electoral reform with ACJD – the latest bone of contention.
