In brief: ‘Lava Jato’ fines to fund environment and education

* An agreement has been reached in Brazil’s supreme court (STF) for the use of a R$2.6bn (US$633m) fund referred to as the ‘Lava Jato’ fund. The R$2.5bn (R$2.6bn in updated value) corresponds to a fine paid by state-owned oil company Petrobras in the US and repatriated to Brazil as part of the Lava Jato anti-corruption operation. According to the agreement reached yesterday with congress and the attorney general, R$1.6bn will be destined to education policies, split between the education ministry (R$1bn), the citizenship ministry (R$250m), the science & technology ministry (R$250m), and the human rights ministry (R$100m). The remaining R$1.06bn will fund prevention, inspection, and the fight against deforestation and illegal fires in the Amazon.
