Sebastián Piñera has announced measures to address water shortages, which include resources to assist more than 380,000 affected families and farmers, investment in water infrastructure, and the promotion of efficiency in irrigation and water consumption. President Piñera also said that in the long-term US$5bn will be invested in water treatment companies in order to expand water production capacity, secure water supply, improve water quality, and to reduce water loses. In the Santiago metropolitan region and the regions of Coquimbo and Valparaíso, 56 communes are experiencing water shortages, while 111 communes in the Coquimbo, Valparaíso, metropolitan, O’Higgins, and Maule regions are in a state of agricultural emergency.
