El Salvador: On 28 August, US Acting Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS)
Kevin McAleenan began a three-day visit to El Salvador where, among other things, he signed a Letter of Intent with El Salvador’s justice & security minister,
Rogelio Rivas, to intensify bilateral cooperation in four areas to address irregular migration from Central America and combat transnational criminal organisations. According to a DHS press release, the four areas of collaboration include
“increasing collaboration through border security and law enforcement operations, expanding our cooperation in information sharing, ensuring close cooperation in building asylum and protection capacity, and continuing our dialogue to promote opportunity and investment in El Salvador”. The US government has sent various officials to El Salvador in recent weeks, including Secretary of State
Michael Pompeo.
