Iván Ontaneda Berrú, has announced that talks are scheduled to begin with Mexican officials regarding a bilateral trade deal. The first set of talks are scheduled for the second half of October in Ecuador’s capital, Quito. Further talks are scheduled in Mexico City in November 2019 and Ontaneda Berrú said he is hopeful that a deal can be concluded in the first quarter of 2020. A trade deal with Mexico would facilitate further integration for Ecuador into the Pacific Alliance, a trade bloc comprised of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. The 14th Pacific Alliance summit which took place in July 2019, in Peru’s capital Lima, established Ecuador as a candidate for associated state membership.
