In brief: Colombia maintains moratorium on fracking

* Colombia’s top administrative court has upheld the decision to maintain a moratorium on the use of fracking. The announcement was in response to a request by the mines & energy ministry for the moratorium to be lifted. In a statement regarding its decision, the court said that “The measure that proposed giving an open road to the exercise of fracking has been defeated while it is decided whether its regulation is legal or not”. The highly anticipated ruling comes at a time of increased debate amongst the government, oil companies, and environmental activists in Colombia concerning the controversial use of hydraulic fracking, the process used to extract oil and gas through breaking rock formations with pressurised liquid.
