In brief: Hurricane Dorian damage put at US$7bn
* US risk insight company KCC has put the cost of the damage for the Bahamas wreaked by Hurricane 'Dorian' at around US$7bn. Data suggests it is one of the most destructive natural catastrophes the region has experienced in its history, with Grand Bahama and the Abaco Islands two of the worst-hit areas within the region. Starting as a tropical depression roughly 1,000 miles east of Trinidad & Tobago, the storm proceeded to intensify, manifesting into a Category Five hurricane with record wind speeds of 185mph as it approached the northwest Bahamas. The KCC report additionally indicates that due to the magnitude of wind speed, it is expected that there will be near total damage to residences and buildings, with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) estimating that 13,000 houses will have been severely or totally destroyed on the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama alone. According to the United Nations, 76,000 people have been made homeless and as of 6 September at least 30 people are confirmed dead, although this figure is set to rise considerably.
