CHILE: Managing relations with Brazil

The cordial relations that Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera maintains with his Brazilian peer Jair Bolsonaro were tested last week by the latter’s personal attack on Michelle Bachelet, a leftist former president of Chile (2006-2010; 2014-2018). Bolsonaro taunted Bachelet by praising Chile’s right-wing dictator Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) just one week before 11 September, the date that marks the anniversary of the military coup which brought Pinochet to power. Although Piñera has sometimes been criticised for the way he has addressed the uneasy legacies of Pinochet’s dictatorship, he has always carefully distanced himself from Bolsonaro’s commendations of the late dictator. This time was no different, although the Chilean government has been quick to avoid any possible negative fallout.
