ARGENTINA: Macri deep in mire as Fernández rides high

Argentina’s election campaign formally got underway on 7 September. Any chance President Mauricio Macri might have had of overturning a big deficit from party primary elections on 11 August appears to have evaporated amid the financial crisis unleashed by the adverse result of this electoral dress rehearsal. Opinion surveys released this week showed that, far from narrowing the cavernous gap to Alberto Fernández, the presidential candidate of the radical Peronist Frente de Todos coalition, Macri is falling even further behind. Fernández is so sure of victory in the first round of presidential elections on 27 October he was not even present for the start of the campaign period, instead opting to visit Spain and Portugal.
