REGION: Leaders seal Amazon pact

Seven countries in South America signed a wide-ranging 16-point accord on 6 September to coordinate action to protect the Amazon rainforest from destruction. The signing of the accord follows fast on the heels of devastating fires in the Brazilian Amazon, igniting global concern. The pact contains some laudable objectives but how closely individual governments adhere to the stated prescriptions is a decidedly moot point. While four heads of state attended, the spectre of the absent Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro hung over the meeting; in a brief appearance via videoconference, his focus was not on the points in the pact but rather defending national sovereignty and retaining control over state policy.
