In brief: Colombia’s avocado exports up 37.6% in first half

* Colombia’s avocado exports in the first half of 2019 totalled US$52.9m, up 37.6% on the same period in 2018. Avocado exports for 2018 totalled US$62.7m. According to the national export promotion agency, ProColombia, the main export destinations for avocados were the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Belgium, with the Colombian departments of Antioquia, Risaralda, Valle del Cauca, and Caldas leading the way in avocado production. Managing director of ProColombia, Flavia Santoro, hailed the increase as a success for the country’s strategy to diversify Colombia’s export basket and achieve more sales in goods unrelated to mining and energy. The report also reveals that, alongside avocados, other agricultural goods to have seen an increase were the cape gooseberry, pineapples, mangos, and lemons.
