COLOMBIA: Electoral violence flares

The murder of three candidates competing in Colombia’s upcoming regional and municipal elections since the start of September has revived old fears about the nefarious influence of the country’s internal conflict on its democratic processes. Although the 2016 peace accord with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) is far from fully implemented, the latest electoral violence demonstrates that much more needs to be done in order to usher in a more peaceful political future for Colombia.
