BRAZIL: Amazon fires persist, as does hazy institutional response

On 15 September, the Brazilian daily Folha de São Paulo published a photograph of an Amazon landscape, in which a sky turned red by flames is reflected in the Tapajós River, one of the major tributaries of the Amazon River. The photo was taken by Eugênio Scannavino, a doctor who leads a local health programme, in Alter do Chão in the state of Pará. The fires in Alter do Chão, which began on 14 September, have continued to burn and spread despite firefighting efforts from local police, firemen and volunteers, as well as military reinforcements. Police are now investigating whether the origin of these fires is criminal.
